Privacy policy
In short: Kanso keeps everything on your phone. It has no servers, no account and no ads, and it doesn't collect or share your data. The rest of this page explains exactly what the app reads, what it keeps, and how you stay in control.
Who we are
Kanso is a personal spend tracker for India, built and maintained by Manoj, an independent developer. Questions about this policy: support@usekanso.app.
What Kanso stores, and where
Everything Kanso stores is kept in the app's private storage on your phone. Other apps can't read it, and it is never sent to us or anyone else: Kanso has no server to send it to, and the app doesn't use the internet.
| Data | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Payments | Amount, date, payee, category, your notes, the card or account (last 4 digits), and the bank alert text for payments it recognises | Stays on your phone |
| Places | Where a spend happened, if you allow location | Stays on your phone |
| Trips, limits, recurring items, settings | To run those features | Stays on your phone |
| Diagnostics log | Helps fix tracking problems (see below) | Stays on your phone unless you share it |
Permissions, and what each one is used for
SMS (read and receive)
Kanso checks incoming SMS on your phone to find payment alerts from banks and card issuers, and once a day re-checks the last 3 days in case one was missed. It saves only payment alerts. Every other message, including personal chats and one-time passwords (OTPs), is skipped and not stored. SMS content is never uploaded.
Notification access (optional)
If you turn it on, Kanso reads payment notifications from UPI and bank apps (and from SMS apps when SMS access is off) to add shop names. Only payment notifications are kept; everything else is ignored.
Location (optional, only while the app is open)
Kanso can save where a spend happened, so you can open it in Maps later. It reads your location only while Kanso is on screen: when you add a spend, or when you tap a payment alert soon after paying. It never reads location in the background and keeps no movement history. To show a place name, the coordinates are passed to your phone's built-in geocoding service (provided by your device maker or Google); Kanso doesn't send them anywhere itself.
Notifications
For the "what was it for?" alert after a payment, renewal reminders and spending-limit alerts. Each can be turned off in Settings → Notifications.
Biometrics (app lock)
If you turn on app lock with your phone's lock, Android shows its own fingerprint, face or PIN screen. Kanso never sees your fingerprint, face or phone PIN, only whether unlocking succeeded. If you use a Kanso PIN instead, only a salted, one-way hash of it is stored on your phone, never the PIN itself.
Diagnostics log
Kanso keeps a private log of the payment messages it saw and why each was saved or skipped, so tracking problems can be fixed. Balances and account numbers are masked, and personal messages, OTPs, caller details and the notes you type are never written to it. The log stays on your phone. It's only shared if you choose Report a problem or Export and send the file yourself.
Backups and exports
Backups and spreadsheet exports are created only when you ask, and saved or shared wherever you choose (for example Google Drive, email or Files). Once you share a file, the app you share it with handles it under its own policy. Kanso does not back up to any cloud automatically, and phone-to-phone transfer of Kanso's data is turned off.
What we don't do
- No account, login or sign-up.
- No analytics, tracking, advertising or third-party SDKs that collect data.
- No selling or sharing of data, because we never receive it.
Your control and deleting your data
- Delete everything: Settings → Data → Erase all data, or uninstall Kanso. Because nothing is stored anywhere else, this removes your data completely.
- Delete one spend: open it and tap Delete.
- Turn off access: revoke SMS, location, notification or notification-access permissions anytime in your phone's settings; Kanso keeps working with what you allow.
This website
usekanso.app uses no cookies, analytics or trackers. If you join early access, the email (and optional name and phone model) you enter is sent to us by email, and used only to invite you to test Kanso on Google Play. Ask us at support@usekanso.app and we'll delete it.
Children
Kanso is meant for adults managing their own money and isn't directed at children under 18.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
